Armed Forces - housing options

We support members of the armed forces, veterans and their families who need housing.

Low cost housing opportunities

If you are a veteran or currently serving in the armed forces, you may get priority access to housing options.

These can help you buy or rent a home at a lower cost.

Veteran organisations may be able to help you secure a private rented tenancy through: 

  • rent deposit or guarantee schemes
  • financial assistance

To start this process contact the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association (SSAFA).

We may also be able to help you secure a private rent.

Forces Help to Buy

This scheme helps serving members of the regular armed forces buy their first home.

You can borrow up to 50% of your annual salary, up to a maximum of £25,000.

Apply for social rented housing

Veterans and serving members of the armed forces can apply to the Highland Housing Register (HHR).

If you are still serving, you can apply before your discharge date.

Veterans Housing Scotland

This charity provides affordable housing for disabled veterans. They have homes in Fort William, Inverness and Nairn.

To apply, you must have:

  • served in the regular armed forces or been deployed operationally as a reserve
  • a physical or mental health disability (this does not need to be linked to your service)

Scottish Veterans Residences

This organisation offers temporary supported housing for veterans who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. They also have social housing available to rent.

Accommodation is available in Edinburgh, Dundee and Glasgow.
