School nursing
The School Nursing Service in Highland provides professional care, support, and advice to promote health and wellbeing to school children aged 5 to 18 years old. The service endeavours to deliver safe, effective, and person-centred care based on the Getting it Right for Every Child Framework (GIRFEC). School Nursing has a continuing focus on prevention, early intervention and support to all families.
Our School Nurses
Our School Nurses are registered nurses with advanced training and specialist expertise in child and family health. They work within community-based teams to support children and young people in achieving their full potential - physically, emotionally, and socially.
Our priority areas
We focus on ten key areas to ensure targeted and meaningful support:
- emotional health and wellbeing
- substance misuse
- child protection
- domestic abuse
- looked after children
- homelessness
- youth justice
- young carers
- sexual health
- transitions
What we do
School Nurse Teams carry out a range of health-related duties, including:
- enuresis (bedwetting) clinics
- sleep support
- P1 health checks
- signposting to other services
- offering advice and support to children, young people, and families
Service availability
Our service is available to all school-aged children and young people in Highland - including those who are home-schooled or not currently attending school. Families can access support regardless of their circumstances.
