Bin Collections Route Optimisation - Ross & Cromarty and Dornoch

The Highland Council is reviewing the waste and recycling collection routes across Ross & Cromarty and Dornoch.

By mapping new, efficient and balanced collection routes this will help to improve the efficiency of the collection vehicles with reduced carbon emissions and improved fuel efficiency.

In addition, the review will also help the Council to meet the demands of growing housing developments across the Highlands.

The new routes are scheduled to start in Ross and Cromarty and Dornoch on Monday 23 October.

Residents in Ross and Cromarty and Dornoch areas will receive a letter this week which will include a 2023 Waste and Recycling Bin Collection Calendar showing the day that their waste and recycling will be collected.

Please be aware that the collection calendar that you receive may be the same as your previous collections as not all bin collections are changing.

Highland Council Business Waste customers that will see a day change will be sent an email with the details of the collection day changes over the next two weeks.

All waste and recycling collections will remain on an alternate weekly basis - refuse collected one week and recycling collected the other week.

However, some householders may see their collection day changing.

Any changes to collection days will start from week commencing Monday 23 October 2023.

Route Optimisation in Ross & Cromarty and Dornoch is part of an overall review of all collection routes in Highland. A phased approach is being adopted when implementing the new routes, with Badenoch & Strathspey being the first area completed in May 2022.

Councillor Graham Mackenzie, Chair of Communities and Place Committee said: "As the collection routes start to change from Monday 23 October, residents and businesses can expect minimal disruptions to bin collections. We have been able to improve the performance and efficiency of the waste and recycling vehicles by utilising specialist software to create the new routes."

He continued: "Reducing carbon emissions and contributing to the council’s financial sustainability is a priority. Route optimisation ensures that we can continue to service the rising number of properties projected to be built in the coming years with our current resources and fleet."

From 23 October, The Council’s Waste Aware Team will be out with the Waste and Recycling Collection Operatives, and on hand to assist householders who have a new collection day. We would also urge the public to help elderly neighbours or relatives put their bin out on the correct day.

Householders in Ross and Cromarty and Dornoch will also receive the following information with the letters about the new collections:

  • Waste and Recycling Bin Collection Calendar
  • A guide of what can and cannot go into your blue recycling bin
  • A guide of the other household recycling services available in your local area
  • Tips on how to reduce waste

Garden waste collections remain unaffected by these changes.  For more information, please visit:
