Provost of Wick, Cllr Jan McEwan said: “John was an absolute gentleman and a well-respected councillor as evidenced by receiving an OBE for his services to the community. He was very intelligent with a lot of common sense and thought carefully before making any decisions, added to which he worked hard for Caithness.

"I will be forever grateful to John as he was a very good mentor to me regarding matters about the community. My heartfelt sympathy goes to John’s family for their loss.”

Provost Struan Mackie, Councillor for Thurso and Northwest Caithness said: "I was very sorry to hear of his passing. John was one of the first people to get in touch on my own election and has been an invaluable source of information and knowledge about local government. He will be greatly missed."

Councillor Margaret Paterson added: “John and I were elected at the same time to serve The Highland Council, and I will always remember him well as we sat beside each other in the Council Chamber.  He loved Caithness and was very proud to serve his community, not only as a Councillor but as Provost of Caithness.

"He was very kind and helpful and would help anyone if he could. I send my deepest condolences to his family.”
