Tribute to former Councillor Ken MacLeod
The Highland Council pays tribute to former Highland Councillor Ken MacLeod who sadly passed on 17 November.
Convener of The Highland Councill Cllr Bill Lobban said: “It is with great sorrow that we learn of Ken’s passing. On behalf of fellow Members and staff of The Highland Council who knew him well, I extend my deepest condolences to his family and friends.”
Ken was elected as a Scottish Liberal Democrat Councillor to serve The Highland Council Inverness Millburn Ward in Inverness in 2007 and again in 2017.
Councillor Alex Graham also paid tribute, he said: “Ken was elected to The Highland Council after an exceptionally lengthy 34-year break from local government, having served for twelve years until 1973 on Inverness Town Council, representing Harbour and Central Ward.
“He took particular interest in issues concerning Inverness as well as his beloved home areas of Ullapool and Loch Broom. A long-standing active supporter of the Scottish Liberal Party, his convictions were often evident in his substantial contributions to Council debates.
“He played a significant part in public life in the Highlands, especially in his adopted hometown of Inverness. He was active in insurance and subsequently practised as a solicitor and was Clerk to Inverness Harbour Trust. He provided advice in a major land buyout on the Isle of Lewis and was active in several business ventures.
“A life-long adherent of the Free Church of Scotland, active participant in local organisations, author of publications on the history of ‘Loch Broom and Highland Banking’, a keen sportsman, the first Judo Black Belt in Inverness, a caring husband and father, Ken Macleod was a true Highlander who over a long life made an real contribution to Highland life.”
Throughout his terms as Councillor, Ken was a Member of the Housing and Social Work, Gaelic, Community Services and Pensions strategic committees and also served on the Inverness, Nairn Badenoch and Strathspey and later City of Inverness Area and Licensing Committees.
