Highland Council winter road conditions for 8 January 2026

The information provided is a summary of reports from operational staff and is intended to give a general indication of typical conditions in each area at a point in time. It is not intended to imply that any individual route is entirely snow and ice free and drivers must be aware that conditions can change rapidly and make their own assessment of conditions for travelling.

Skye & Raasay (as at 07:37)

Full call out.  Treatments running by route priority this morning with some icy patches being reported by drivers.  No fresh snowfall overnight.  Minus road temperatures and extended sleet showers forecast for the next 24 hour period.  Driver caution advised.

The C1239 Lusa to Kylerhea Road reopened yesterday evening (7 January 2026).

Ross & Cromarty East (as at 07:45)

Very low road surface temperatures and air temperatures at start of treatment, reports of icy stretches and frozen slush but all primary routes in generally good condition with no overnight snow. All footpaths out and treatment ongoing throughout the day.  No overnight issues reported.

Sutherland (as at 09:58)

Road surface temperatures below zero.  Hard packed snow in centre of carriageway on Primary 1 routes.  Hard packed snow on Primary 2 routes.  All routes being bladed and treated, including footpaths.

Caithness (as at 09:30)

Road surface temperatures below zero with hard frost.  Most roads require gritting only.  A covering of snow on top of frozen slush on some roads.

Nairn (as at 06:32)

Fresh snow on higher routes overnight.  Ice effecting all routes this morning.  Treating Primary and Secondary routes but will take some time before we can move on to side roads.  Footpaths being treated.  Caution on all roads across the network this morning.

Badenoch & Strathspey (as at 06:33)

Fresh snow on rural routes overnight.  Ice effecting all routes this morning.  Treating Primary and Secondary routes but will take some time before we can move on to side roads.  Footpaths being treated.  Caution on all roads across the network this morning.

Ward 5 Ross and Cromarty (as at 06:26)

Snow and Ice affecting all routes in the area.  Winter treatment ongoing.  No overnight issues reported.

 

Inverness (as at 06:12)


Caution advised on all routes.  Treating all routes and footpaths.  Blackfold hill still closed, operatives actively treating to make safe.  Snow and ice still affecting all roads in our area.

Lochaber (as at 08:53)

Roads damp, some black ice and ice flows treated.  Priority and Secondary routes being done then treatment will be carried out on other routes.  Drive to road conditions.  No problems overnight.
