Highland Council winter road conditions for 9 January 2026

The information provided is a summary of reports from operational staff and is intended to give a general indication of typical conditions in each area at a point in time. It is not intended to imply that any individual route is entirely snow and ice free and drivers must be aware that conditions can change rapidly and make their own assessment of conditions for travelling.
Skye & Raasay (as at 08:07)
Colder than forecast this morning with current road temperatures down to minus -3.5c. Drivers reporting frost and ice requiring driver caution. Full call out this morning with treatments running by Priority.
Ross & Cromarty Mid & East Ross (as at 08:48)
Road surface temperatures and air temperatures very low with readings of -6 in places. Full turnout this morning with all primary and secondary routes reporting good condition, some frozen slush in wheel tracks. Treatment will extend to all others again this morning. All footpath tractors out with no issues reported.
Sutherland (as at 08:50)
All primary routes have sections of frozen slush in the centre of the carriageway, but mainly clear otherwise. Secondary routes still have hard packed snow in sections but are turning black also, footpaths still have hard packed snow on them.
Nairn (as at 06:21)
Ice affecting all routes this morning. Treating Primary and Secondary routes but will take some time before we can move on to side roads. Footpaths being treated. Caution on all roads across the network this morning.
Badenoch & Strathspey (as at 06:21)
Ice affecting all routes this morning. Treating Primary and Secondary routes but will take some time before we can move on to side roads. Footpaths being treated. Caution on all roads across the network this morning.
Ward 5 Ross and Cromarty (as at 07:54)
Road surface temperatures well below zero this morning with frost and ice on most routes. Winter treatment of all routes and footways ongoing. No overnight issues reported.
Lochaber (as at 09:03)
Low temperatures, some black ice on some routes, priority and secondary routes as well as footpaths being done, then other routes getting treated as per priority, no problems overnight.
