At today’s Lochaber Area Committee (Monday 26 January 2026), Members agreed to the introduction of a permanent 18‑tonne Maximum Gross Weight (MGW) restriction on the C1094 road in Glen Etive to safeguard the long‑term condition of the sensitive and structurally vulnerable route.

The Highland Council, as the roads authority, has already implemented a 30‑foot vehicle length restriction under an existing traffic order covering the section from Dalness Estate to Loch Etive.

Several bridges along this corridor are also subject to weight limits due to structural constraints.

Each year, the Council allocates capital funding to maintain the C1094, which experiences significant pressures from high visitor numbers accessing Glen Etive.

However, the road is inherently fragile, having been constructed without a traditional foundation and instead floating over long stretches of peat.

This makes it highly susceptible to damage from heavy vehicles.

Without intervention, the Council cannot ensure the long‑term viability of the C1094 or continue to fund repeated repairs caused by damage from overweight traffic.

The new restriction aims to ensure the road remains safe and serviceable for residents, visitors, and emergency access.

The introduction of the 18‑tonne MGW restriction is therefore essential to protect the integrity of the route and prevent further deterioration.

Lochaber Committee Chair, Cllr Kate Willis said: "The C1094 was never designed to support heavy haulage or major construction traffic.

"Continued use by overweight vehicles has resulted in subsidence and structural impacts on the wheel tracks, placing an unsustainable burden on maintenance budgets.

"The new weight restriction is a necessary step to preserve this unique and environmentally sensitive road for the future."

The Statutory Consultation process began on 15 May 2025 and concluded on 3 October 2025, receiving one objection.
