Members of The Highland Council’s Corporate Resources Committee today were presented with an update on the vital work carried out by the Visitor Experience Rangers at The Old Man of Storr.

The report also updated members on the significant path, safety, and environmental management undertaken throughout the winter of 2025–26.

More than 300,000 visitors enjoyed the highly popular Old Man of Storr in 2025, cementing its status as one of the most iconic and highly visited natural landmarks. The Visitor Experience Rangers continue to play a central role in protecting this landscape while ensuring a safe and positive experience for thousands of visitors each month.

Visitor Experience Rangers undertook extensive path and environmental maintenance this winter. This included clearing drainage channels, washout repairs, path levelling, and responding to damage caused by prolonged freeze–thaw conditions and heavy rainfall.

The team also continued essential environmental and biodiversity monitoring and positively report that native tree species within the Lower Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) have shown good resilience to both frost and recent storms.

Rangers’ work combines practical, hands-on environmental management with daily visitor engagement, offering updates on weather, recommended equipment, and safe route choices. Their local knowledge adds an important interpretive element, helping visitors to better understand and appreciate the cultural and environmental significance of The Old Man of Storr.

The Storr site also includes parking, EV charging points, and public conveniences. The Storr Centre supports local businesses by providing a wide range of high-quality products from local producers and suppliers, and the associated local employments, skills and training helping to support the supply chain.

Sustained investment in the site means the work of the Visitor Experience Rangers continues to make a significant and positive impact at the Old Man of Storr. Their local knowledge and commitment to visitor safety, environmental protection, and day‑to‑day site care is invaluable, including during challenging winter conditions. These steps are positive for both the local community and the many visitors who enjoy visiting this iconic and well-run site.

The Storr is a key initiative within the Council's Income Generation portfolio, demonstrating the positive impacts investment is having to generate income, support economic growth, and enable the work to protect and sustain this iconic landmark for the community and the many visitors it welcomes each year.

Ongoing investment directly supports six local permanent jobs employed at The Storr Centre. Building on the success of the Centre, and in response to customer demand, customers can now purchase products from the recently launched online shop which can be accessed at thestorr.com.

The Council thanks the local community, and key partners - including Skye Mountain Rescue Team and NatureScot - whose ongoing involvement supports responsible visitor management and the long-term stewardship of the site.
