The demolition of the Mackinnon Memorial Hospital in Broadford, Isle of Skye, is scheduled to get underway before the end of this month (March 2026).
The work follows the transfer of the site from NHS Highland to The Highland Council.
The Highland Council has had positive recent meetings with NHS Highland and the local Mackinnon Memorial Hospital Working Group, with a view to using the cleared site to make a real difference through accommodation opportunities for staff working in health and social care, as well as other opportunities to strengthen health and social care in the area.
Discussions are still at an early stage, and there will be community consultation as part of the planning process.
Highland Council members and officers have been liaising with the community group and discussions have been constructive. Key stakeholders have recognised the potential of the site to help address housing needs in the area, including key worker housing and support for those working in health and social care.
Richard MacDonald, NHS Highland’s Director of Estates, Facilities and Capital Planning, said: “We’re delighted to be working with MacKinnon Memorial Hospital Working Group looking at the provision of healthcare accommodation as part of the development, and exploring other opportunities that can arise as part of the project going forward.”
The Mackinnon Memorial Hospital site has been empty since the opening of the brand-new Broadford Hospital in 2022.
