With the clocks now forward and planning for home improvements getting underway, residents are being reminded that this is the time of year when rogue traders and doorstep are becoming more active.

To help people stay safe, Highland Council Trading Standards is highlighting simple steps households can take – and promoting the Highland Trusted Trader (HTT) scheme as the easiest way to find reputable local trades.

Spring often sees a rise in doorstep crime involving:

  • Roofing and guttering scams
  • Impersonation of legitimate companies
  • Pressure selling and on‑the‑spot “special deals”
  • Traders offering work that’s unnecessary or poorly done

These scams can cost residents hundreds or even thousands of pounds and they disproportionately target older or isolated individuals.

HTT provides a safe, local directory of businesses that:

  • Are vetted by Trading Standards
  • Follow a strict code of practice
  • Display real customer reviews
  • Commit to fair, transparent pricing

Using HTT gives residents confidence that the trader entering their home is reputable and accountable.

David MacKenzie, Trading Standards Manager said:  “With home improvement season kicking off, the message is simple: take your time, check who you’re hiring, and use trusted sources. A few quick checks can prevent costly mistakes – and ensure your spring projects get off to a safe start.”

To stay safe and avoid scams:

  1. Get at least three quotes before agreeing to any work.
  2. Check identification of anyone who comes to your door.
  3. Never agree to work on the spot – reputable traders don’t pressure you.
  4. Use trusted schemes like Highland Trusted Trader to find reliable businesses.
