The Highland Council pays tribute to former Highland Councillor Basil Dunlop who recently passed this May 2026.

Convener of The Highland Council Cllr Bill Lobban said: “I was saddened to hear of the passing of ex-Councillor Basil Dunlop. Badenoch and Strathspey can have no greater servant than Basil who represented the Strath for many years in both The Highland Council and its predecessor the Regional Council. Even after retirement Basil played an important role locally and was extremely helpful to me, as a new Councillor, as a huge source of knowledge and experience.

“He will be sadly missed by family, friends and all those he served over the years. On behalf of The Highland Council, and fellow Members of Badenoch and Strathspey, I extend our deepest condolences to Basil’s family and friends.”

Basil was elected as an Independent Councillor to serve The Highland Council in 1995 and 1999 for the Grantown Ward and was returned unopposed in 2003.

Throughout his service he was Area Chair of the Planning, Development, Europe and Tourism Committee and Cultural and Leisure Service Committee, and Vice Chair of The Highland Council Planning Committee.

He was also a member of various Council committees including Policy and Resources, Cultural and Leisure / Culture and Sport, Education, Social Work, Personnel, Direct Services, Land and Environment; Planning, Development, Europe and Tourism; Transport, Environmental and Community Services, Planning Select, Sustainable Development Select; Land and Environment Select and the Police Board.
