The Highland Council is currently investigating reports of blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) at Loch Morlich, near Aviemore. A notification was received on 13 July 2026 from the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) and enquiries are ongoing in partnership with NHS Highland and other relevant agencies.
During periods of prolonged warm weather, the likelihood of blue-green algae developing in water bodies such as lochs, ponds, reservoirs, and slow-moving rivers can increase. Some blooms may produce toxins that can be harmful to both people and animals.
As a precautionary measure, members of the public are advised to avoid contact with any algal scum that may be present on the water. Pet owners should also ensure that dogs and other animals are kept away from affected areas and prevented from entering the water where algal scum is visible.
Warning notices will be displayed at Loch Morlich advising visitors to avoid contact with the algal scum while investigations continue.
The Highland Council will provide further updates as more information becomes available.
