The Highland Council’s Justice Service teams will be hosting open days in Inverness and Golspie this September.
The public are invited to open day sessions on Wednesday 9 September at Inverness Justice Centre and Thursday 10 September at Golspie Justice Services.
Councillor David Fraser, Chair of Highland Council’s Health, Social Care and Wellbeing Committee said:
“This is a valuable opportunity for members of the public to better understand the justice system, the people involved, and the important role Justice Social Work plays in supporting positive outcomes and safer communities.”
People are invited to come along and find out more about the work of Justice Social Work and an individual’s journey through the justice system; community sentences in Scotland and particularly in local areas.
Attendees at the Inverness public session will get the chance to:
- Tour a courtroom.
- Follow an individual’s journey from the point of entering the justice system.
- Gain insight into the role of Justice Social Work.
- Learn about sentencing options and what they mean in practice.
- Take part in interactive case studies based on real-life examples.
- Ask questions in dedicated question and answers sessions.
Staff will explain some of the justice process with emphasis on the work that The Highland Council Justice Service provides to the Court, the Parole Board, Scottish Ministers and other stakeholders.
The public open sessions will take place in Inverness at:
- Inverness Justice Centre, Longman Road, Inverness, IV1 1AH

Chair of the Sutherland Committee, Councillor Richard Gale, said:
“The open day at Golspie on the tenth September will provide members of the public with an opportunity to gain an insight into the Justice Service which plays an important role in our communities.
“The Council works closely with partners to provide support and supervision to offenders, aiming to help them reintegrate into the community and address issues that lead to offending. The service supports offenders to gain new skills and increase their confidence which enables them to avoid reoffending while making a positive contribution to their local communities. We encourage the public to come along and find out more about the excellent work going on locally.”
Attendees at the Golspie public session will have the opportunity to:
- Take part in a discussion and insight into the work of Justice Social Work.
- Learn about information on unpaid work.
- Hear about the input from the programmes team.
- Familiarise themselves with an overview of the role of social work within the justice system.
