Two-day event to showcase the latest discoveries, research and heritage projects from across the Highlands
Archaeology enthusiasts, community heritage groups, researchers and professionals are being encouraged to secure their places now for the Highland Archaeology Conference 2026, following the launch of an exciting programme featuring speakers from across Scotland and beyond.
Organised by The Highland Council's Historic Environment Team, the annual conference will take place on the 10 and 11 October in Inverness and will highlight recent archaeological discoveries, heritage projects and research connected to the Highlands. The event aims to promote the archaeology of the Highlands and enable communities, professionals and researchers to participate in and benefit from our shared heritage.
For the first time, the conference, which will be held in The Highland Council’s Chamber, will offer both in-person and online attendance options, making the event more accessible to audiences wherever they are based.
Chair of the Council’s Economy and Infrastructure Committee, Councillor Ken Gowans, said: "This conference has become one of the highlights of the heritage calendar, bringing together experts, community groups and enthusiasts to share knowledge and celebrate the remarkable archaeology and history of the Highlands.
"This year's programme offers an excellent range of presentations covering everything from prehistoric sites and archaeological discoveries to local heritage projects and the latest research. It reflects the depth and diversity of archaeological work taking place across our region.
"I would encourage anyone with an interest in archaeology, history or heritage to book their place early. The conference has built a strong reputation over the years, and demand is expected to be high, particularly with the addition of online attendance this year."
This year's programme features talks on a wide range of fascinating topics, including excavations at Wester Moy Henge near Contin, recent coastal heritage surveys in Caithness and the Dornoch Firth, discoveries beneath Inverness Castle, Iron Age archaeology, Highland rural industry, archaeological mapping projects, and the ongoing work of heritage organisations across the region. Speakers will represent organisations including Historic Environment Scotland, National Museum of Scotland, National Library of Scotland, and professional archaeologists, architects, universities, museums and community heritage groups.
Alongside the conference programme, attendees will have the opportunity to visit exhibition stands and meet representatives from museums, heritage groups, archaeological units and national organisations involved in preserving and promoting Highland heritage. Organisations interested in showcasing their work can also book a stall at the event.
Anyone wishing to attend can book either an in-person or online ticket through Eventbrite. Separate booking arrangements apply for each attendance option.
The organisers are reminding anyone keen to attend that tickets can only be booked through Eventbrite and regretfully they will be unable to take in-person bookings on the day.
