The Highland Council is planning to carry out footway improvement works on Academy Street in Inverness between January and March 2027.
Works will deliver improvement to pedestrian infrastructure between Friar’s Lane and Falcon Square, including:
- Upgrade of traffic lights at Union Street and Friar’s Lane.
- Footway widening in strategic places on Academy Street where footfall is heavy.
- Raised footway at Rose Street and Falcon Square junctions to prioritise pedestrians.
- New drop kerbs and tactile paving at uncontrolled road crossing points.
- Resurfacing of footways with tarmac on the North and South sides of Academy Street (excluding sections of Caithness Slab, that will be retained).
Loading bays, bus stops, taxi ranks and waiting restrictions will be unchanged by works and there will be no alteration to traffic flow through Academy Street.
A drop-in session to discuss the project and view design drawings with officers from Highland Council and Inverness BID will take place in the Food Hall at The Victorian Market, Academy Street, Inverness, IV1 1JN on Wednesday 11 November 2026 between 10am and 2pm.
Letters outlining the scope of the project and copies of design drawings will be delivered to businesses in the City Centre and residents of Academy Street prior to the drop-in session.
