Bonfire and smoke complaints

What you can do first

Often, the best way to resolve a bonfire or smoke issue is to speak directly with your neighbour. A friendly, honest conversation can help avoid a long dispute.

Explain the impact

Let them know:

  • what is disturbing you and your family
  • when the smoke occurs
  • how it affects your daily life

Many people do not realise their activities are causing a disturbance. Your neighbour may feel embarrassed when you raise the issue and might initially deny there is a problem. This is a common reaction.

If speaking is not an option

We understand that it is not always easy to approach your neighbour in person. If that is the case, consider writing a polite letter to explain your concerns. Keep the tone respectful and constructive.

Focus on the future

Remember, the goal is to find a solution that works for both you and your neighbour. Try not to dwell on past incidents - focus instead on how things can improve moving forward.
