We are committed to creating Scotland’s greenest transport system across its largest geographical area. This vision responds to the unique challenges of the region and supports our climate change commitments.
Our vision
We will lead the development of a regional electric vehicle (EV) network that accelerates the transition to low carbon transport for Highland communities.
We aim to be a leading authority in bridging low carbon connectivity for both city and rural areas.
Strategic commitments
We will:
- ensure equality of access to EV charging infrastructure, including rural and island communities
- support economic recovery through investment in local EV infrastructure
- enable integrated transport initiatives for residents, tourists and visitors
- maximise the use of natural resources to deliver sustainable, locally generated solutions wherever feasible
- consider emerging technologies to ensure appropriate solutions are appraised as the sector evolves
- support climate change targets through electrification of The Highland Council fleet
- attract external investment to progress our vision
Supporting national targets
Our vision supports government ambitions by contributing to current targets:
- Scottish Government: phase out the need for new petrol and diesel cars and vans by 2030
- UK Government: end the sale of new petrol and diesel cars (excluding some hybrids) from 2030
This vision will be used in funding applications and project documents to demonstrate our strategic direction and build confidence with delivery partners.
