The Wick street design project is a community led initiative to promote improvements to the centre of Wick.

Project updates

2019

In partnership with The Royal Burgh of Wick Community Council and Caithness Community Partnership, we applied to Sustrans Scotland for funding through the Street Design Programme.

2019-2020

Sustrans’ Street Design team, in collaboration with us, worked closely with the local community of Wick, to develop a concept design which aimed to create:

  • warm, welcoming and more attractive public spaces
  • a comfortable and safe environment to walk, wheel and cycle
  • better travel experiences through Wick town centre - particularly when accessing local facilities
  • a sense of identity for the town centre in Wick, drawing on local culture and heritage

2022

A bid for funding was made to the Sustrans Places for Everyone programme. This allowed us to take the ideas from the concept phase and work them into a detailed design for tendering purposes and for construction works.

2025

Funding from the Tier 2 - Active Travel Infrastructure Fund was secured for the installation of rising bollards in the pedestrian zone in advance of the main project.

2025-2026

A further successful bid for funding from the Tier 2 - Active Travel Infrastructure Fund enabled us to issue a tender for the remaining works which was awarded to local company, GMR Henderson Ltd. These works will include widening of footways and improvements to the signalised junction and pedestrian crossings on Bridge Street and High Street and new seating and planting in High Street and Market Place as well as replacing the surfacing materials in both locations. Construction will begin at the end of October 2025.

There are general layout drawings available for the Bridge Street and High Street junction, and High Street and Market Place.
