Guidance for school fetes and community events

Introduction

Schools and other Council-owned venues are not just event spaces - they are also workplaces. This means they are subject to important legal requirements, including the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974.

Our duty of care

To protect employees, pupils, contractors, and visitors across Highland, we must comply with all relevant health and safety regulations. We ask that staff, applicants, contractors, and sub-contractors also follow these requirements when planning and delivering events.

Expectations for event organisers

All individuals and organisations involved in events are expected to:

  • follow all applicable statutory regulations and safety guidance
  • prioritise safety throughout the planning and delivery of the event
  • work collaboratively to maintain a secure environment for all attendees

Risk assessments

Before any event takes place, a comprehensive risk assessment must be completed. This is essential to:

  • identify and mitigate potential risks
  • prevent disruption or cancellation of events
  • protect the integrity of Council property and the well-being of all participants

Working together for safe events

By following these guidelines, we can ensure that school events across Highland are safe, successful, and enjoyable for everyone.
