Trails in the Highlands
There are 3 designated Long Distance Routes (LDRs) in the Highlands; they are:
These routes link historic paths, drove roads and pilgrimage routes with new paths.
All are marked with the thistle symbol in a hexagon.
We manage and maintain these routes to a high standard.
Scotland’s Great Trails
Scotland’s Great Trails are nationally promoted routes for walking, cycling and paddling.
- each trail is waymarked and mostly off-road
- all are at least 25 miles long
- they offer visitor services and are suitable for day trips or longer
Together they provide over 1300 miles of paths across Scotland.

Collectively, these routes provide over 1300 miles of well managed paths from the Borders to the Highlands, offering great opportunities to explore the best of Scotland's nature and landscapes and to experience our amazing history and culture. Other than the 3 long distance routes listed, the other Scottish Great Trails in Highland are the Great Glen Canoe Trail and the Dava Way.
