Doorstep crime

How to avoid rogue doorstep traders

Choose a trader yourself

If you need repairs or maintenance:

  • always find a trader yourself — do not rely on cold callers
  • if you are eligible, you can contact our Handyperson Service

If a doorstep trader calls

Follow these steps to stay safe:

Do not agree to anything on the spot
Be suspicious if they want to start work immediately
Watch out for pressure tactics, such as:

  • “special offers” if you sign up now
  • claims that the work is urgent
  • saying your neighbours have already agreed

Be wary of flattery - some traders try to build trust by pretending to have things in common with you
Always ask for ID and check it yourself:

  • contact the organisation directly using a number you have looked up
  • do not use a number the trader gives you - it could be fake

Lock your back door and close windows before answering the front door
Some doorstep traders work with distraction burglars who enter your home while you are distracted.

Never hand over a cash deposit
Do not be afraid to say no

Use the Nominated Neighbour Scheme

Police Scotland’s Nominated Neighbour Scheme lets a trusted neighbour check unexpected callers for you. It is a simple way to stay safe.
