How we enforce trading standards laws

Our enforcement policy

We use a range of methods to enforce trading standards laws across the Highlands.

Routine inspections and visits

We visit:

  • manufacturers
  • retailers
  • importers
  • other trade premises

We check that:

  • weighing and measuring equipment is accurate and used correctly
  • goods are safe and properly labelled
  • prices are clearly displayed
  • product descriptions are honest and not misleading

Testing and sampling

We regularly test and sample goods and services to check:

  • product safety
  • accuracy of descriptions
  • quantity and measurements

Targeted operations

We carry out special projects to tackle:

  • rogue traders
  • problem areas identified through complaints or intelligence

Investigations

We investigate alleged breaches of criminal trading standards legislation. This includes:

  • gathering evidence
  • interviewing witnesses
  • taking enforcement action where necessary

General enforcement areas

We enforce laws covering:

  • pricing and price display
  • trade descriptions
  • weights and measures
  • consumer product safety
  • counterfeit goods
  • consumer credit

Specialist enforcement areas

We also regulate specific sectors, including:

  • motor vehicles – supply and servicing
  • petrol and diesel – supply, storage, and retail
  • fireworks and explosives – storage and sale
  • poisons – retail sale
  • taxis and private hire cars – licensing and regulation
  • fertilisers and animal feed – supply and storage
