Active and sustainable travel

What is active and sustainable travel?

Active travel is about getting around using your own body power - walking, wheeling or cycling - and links nicely with sustainable forms of transport, such as the bus, train, or lift-sharing that can often include a walk or cycle to get to.

Sustainable travel is the movement of people and goods in a way that minimises the impact on the environment. This includes:

  • Improving walking, wheeling, and cycling infrastructure
  • Enhancing public transport options
  • Managing traffic more effectively

These changes help reduce reliance on private cars, making travel more efficient and environmentally friendly.

Choose active and sustainable travel

Choosing active or sustainable travel for your daily journeys has benefits for:

  • your health: regular physical activity improves mental wellbeing and helps prevent or manage many health conditions
  • your finances: walking, wheeling, or cycling is far cheaper than running a car - especially a second car
  • your community: fewer cars mean cleaner air, quieter streets, and safer neighbourhoods for everyone
  • essential car users: reducing unnecessary car journeys frees up road space and parking for those who genuinely need to drive
  • fairness and inclusion: not everyone drives - investing in active and sustainable travel supports independence for people with disabilities, older adults, young people, and those on lower incomes
  • the environment: fewer car journeys mean lower carbon emissions and less air pollution - helping tackle climate change
