What the board does
The Highland and Western Isles Valuation Joint Board (VAL) is responsible for the administrative oversight of the Assessor and Electoral Registration Officer’s activities. This includes setting the annual budget.

VAL does not have operational responsibility for:
- determining property valuations
- setting council tax bands
- managing electoral registration
These operational matters are the responsibility of the Assessor and Electoral Registration Officer. Decisions are subject to independent appeal procedures for each area of activity.
