Ending your council house tenancy

Before you move out

Before leaving your home, you must:

  • pay any rent or other charges (such as court costs or repair recharges) up to the end of your tenancy
  • leave the house and garden clean and tidy
  • remove carpets and personal belongings, unless agreed with your Housing Officer
  • remove any sheds or outbuildings that are unsafe or in poor condition
  • check with your Housing Officer if any improvements you made should be removed or left - you may be entitled to compensation for some improvements
  • tell your gas, electricity and phone providers you are leaving - give them your new address and take final meter readings

If you move out between October and March, let us know. We may need to drain the water system to prevent burst pipes. If you do not tell us and damage occurs, you may be charged for repairs.

House inspections

We will arrange a time to inspect your home before you move out. This is your chance to discuss any issues.

If there is damage beyond normal wear and tear, you may be asked to carry out repairs. If repairs are not done before you leave, we will do the work and charge you for it.
