Mobility scooters and powered wheelchairs

Mobility scooters and powered wheelchairs can help you stay independent. Before you get one, you need to make sure it is safe.

Before you get a mobility scooter or powered wheelchair

You must get our permission before you use, store or charge one of these at home. This is to keep everyone safe.

Speak to your housing officer or warden. We will check the fire risk. We follow Scottish Government fire safety guidance.

We may refuse permission if there is a safety risk. We will explain why and how you can fix it. If you already have a scooter, you still need permission.

Before you buy, check:

  • your doors are wide enough
  • you have a safe place to store and charge it
  • you can afford the cost of storage and insurance
