Help with rent if you are on a low income

How to apply for Universal Credit Housing Element

You may be eligible if:

  • you are on a low income or unemployed
  • you and your partner are under pension age
  • you have less than £16,000 in savings

What you need to know

Universal Credit is paid monthly in arrears and may include help with your rent. You are responsible for paying your rent to the Council.

If you live in Scotland, you can choose to:

  • be paid twice a month instead of once a month
  • have your rent paid directly to your landlord

These are called Scottish Choices and are designed to help with budgeting. If you are struggling, we can also ask for your rent to be paid directly to us.

Universal Credit does not include help with Council Tax.

You must apply separately for Council Tax Reduction.
