Who can get Housing Benefit

You may be able to get Housing Benefit if you rent your home from a private landlord and are on a low income.

Basic eligibility

To qualify, you must:

  • pay rent for your home
  • be on a low income or get benefits
  • have savings under £16,000 (unless you get Guarantee Pension Credit)
  • live in the UK and not be subject to immigration control

When you might not qualify

You are unlikely to get Housing Benefit if you:

  • live with a close relative who is your landlord
  • are a full-time student (unless you are disabled or have children)
  • rent from a former partner or ex-spouse
  • own your home

Special circumstances

You may still qualify if you are:

  • a carer or foster parent
  • living in supported housing
  • disabled
  • over pension age
