Who can get Housing Benefit
You may be able to get Housing Benefit if you rent your home from a private landlord and are on a low income.
Basic eligibility
To qualify, you must:
- pay rent for your home
- be on a low income or get benefits
- have savings under £16,000 (unless you get Guarantee Pension Credit)
- live in the UK and not be subject to immigration control
When you might not qualify
You are unlikely to get Housing Benefit if you:
- live with a close relative who is your landlord
- are a full-time student (unless you are disabled or have children)
- rent from a former partner or ex-spouse
- own your home
Special circumstances
You may still qualify if you are:
- a carer or foster parent
- living in supported housing
- disabled
- over pension age
