Order a copy of a certificate
You can order a copy of a birth, death, marriage or civil partnership certificate registered in Scotland since 1855.
If the event occurred within the last two years and was not registered in the Highlands, please contact us first to check whether the certificate is available.

If you were adopted
If you were adopted legally in Scotland, you should apply via the National Records of Scotland website.
Costs
The fees vary depending on when your event was registered and the type of service required:
- Registered less than one month ago: £10
- Registered more than one month ago: £15 (includes search fee)
Postage costs are as follows:
- £2 within the UK
- £4 outside the UK
You may also send a stamped, self-addressed envelope instead. If you prefer guaranteed, trackable postage, please contact us before placing your order.
Processing time
We aim to send your certificate within 10 working days.
If you need it faster, choose Express Priority for an additional £10:
- order online before 12 noon for same-day posting or collection after 3pm
- order online after 12 noon for next working day collection or posting
