Help with funeral costs and bereavement support

Help with funeral costs

If someone close to you has died, you may be eligible for financial assistance with funeral costs or other support.

Funeral Support Payment (Scotland)

You can apply for the Funeral Support Payment if you live in Scotland and are responsible for paying for the funeral.

The person who has died must have lived in the UK. The funeral must take place in the UK or in certain European countries.

You also need to be receiving specific benefits or tax credits, such as Universal Credit, Pension Credit or Housing Benefit.

This payment helps cover burial or cremation costs and includes a flat rate for other expenses. It may also contribute toward travel, document, or medical costs.

The amount you get depends on what benefits you claim and whether the deceased had a funeral plan.

How to apply

You can apply online or by phone. Before applying, register the death and give your funeral director permission to speak to Social Security Scotland.
