Register a birth

Who can register a birth

If the parents of the child are married to each other or in a registered civil partnership either parent can register the birth. Both parents details will be recorded on the birth entry.

If the baby's parents are not married to each other or in a registered civil partnership the mother can either register the birth:

  • on her own (the father or parent's name will not to be recorded)
  • jointly with the father or parent. Their details will be recorded in the register

There may be circumstances where both parents cannot attend together and we can advise on this.

There are declaration forms we can provide to allow both parents names to be recorded. Contact us to discuss before your appointment to register.
