Who can register a stillbirth
If the parents are married or in a civil partnership, either parent can register the stillbirth, and both parents’ details will be recorded. You will need the parents’ marriage or civil partnership certificate.
Parents are not married or in a civil partnership
If the parents are not married or in a civil partnership, the mother can:
- register the stillbirth on her own (no father’s name will be recorded), or
- register jointly with the father or other parent, so both names are recorded
If both parents cannot attend together, we can provide declaration forms to allow both names to be recorded. Contact us before your appointment to discuss this.
If the mother is unable to register, other people may be able to act as an informant. Contact your chosen Registration Office for advice.
