Dangerous buildings

Report a dangerous building

We are responsible for making sure dangerous buildings do not pose a risk to the public.

What building owners must do

Building owners are responsible for keeping their properties safe and secure. This includes making sure buildings do not become dangerous or fall into disrepair.

We encourage all owners to take this responsibility seriously.

When we take action

If a building becomes dangerous or defective and the owner does not take appropriate steps, we may take action under the Building (Scotland) Act 2003 to:

  • make the building safe
  • prevent access to the building or nearby public areas
  • carry out emergency work, including demolition if needed

We may recover the cost of this work from the building owner.

How to report a dangerous building

If you think a building is dangerous, tell us straight away.

We will check the building and take action if needed.
