Memorial safety inspections

We carry out regular safety inspections of memorials in all our burial grounds. This follows Scottish Government guidance.

If a memorial is found to be unsafe:

  • we will place a caution sign next to it
  • we may brace it temporarily using wooden stakes
  • if it poses an immediate risk, we will take action to make it safe

The burial plot holder or their family is responsible for keeping a memorial clean and in a safe condition. You can contact a stonemason or funeral director for advice.

We have a legal duty to keep burial grounds safe for visitors, staff and contractors.
