What are Community Councils?
Community councils help make sure local voices are heard.
They are groups of local people who speak up for their area. We help set them up, and volunteers run them.
They help public services understand what matters to the community.
Community councils:
- speak up for the community
- bring people together to make things happen
- protect and promote the identity of the area
- give advice and share views on local issues
- support activities that improve wellbeing
Examples of what they do:
- run projects to support older people, single parents, young people and minority groups
- send out community newsletters
- carry out local surveys
- campaign on local issues
- organise events like galas
Being part of a community council helps you learn how local government works and what is happening in your area.
We provide each community council with an annual administrative grant to assist with operating costs.
