Tackling poverty
We have been asked to improve and, crucially, accelerate our collective approach to tackling poverty in the Highlands.
Our focus is on effective strategies and making a real difference.
We aim to identify the causes and consequences of poverty across Highland’s diverse communities, improve early intervention, and develop coordinated approaches to support people and reduce poverty and inequality.
We are committed to engaging with and listening to communities throughout the Highlands. Our evidence-gathering sessions have taken place across the region.
Who we are
What are the root causes of poverty and inequality in the Highlands today? How are these experienced in different parts of the region? And what actions are needed to reduce these risks sustainably?
These are central questions to our work as members of the Highland Poverty and Equality Commission. Comprising five experts from the voluntary, public, and business sectors, five elected members, and two Co-Chairs, we were established by The Highland Council to work independently. Our goal is to consider, improve, and most importantly, accelerate our collective efforts to address poverty in Highland.
Following an interim report in December, we will present our findings to the Council and key partners in summer 2026.
