How the points system works
We give points based on your housing situation. The more points you have, the higher your priority.
You can earn points in more than one category.
70 points
You may get 70 points if:
- you are homeless or at risk of homelessness and meet the local connection rules
- your home is in very poor condition (for example, unsafe structure, no electricity, serious damp)
- you or someone in your household has a serious health condition made worse by your home
- you are a young person leaving care
- you need to move out of supported accommodation or care to live independently
- you are a kinship carer and your home is not suitable
- you are approved to adopt or foster but need a bigger home
30 points
You may get 30 points if:
- you live in a home leased by a housing association and the lease ends in 6 months or less
- you and another Highland Housing Register (HHR) tenant want to move in together and agree to give up your current homes
- you have a valid notice to leave your home (for example, from a private landlord or the armed forces)
- you or someone in your household has a medium-level health need that means you need to move
20 points
You may get 20 points if:
- your home is too big for your needs (HHR tenants only)
- your home is too small for your household (per extra bedroom needed, up to 60 points)
- you have regular overnight access to children and need an extra bedroom
- you share a kitchen or bathroom with 2 or more other households
- your home has medium-level problems (for example, no heating or poor insulation)
- you live or work in the area you are applying for
- you are staying with friends or family and could be asked to leave
- you or someone in your household has a low-level health need that means you need to move
10 points
You may get 10 points if:
- you need to move to give care to someone
- you need to move to receive care from someone
2 points
You may get 2 points for every month you are homeless after your positive homeless decision.
