Our sheltered housing
Sheltered tenants get an enhanced housing service. This includes a bit of extra help so that you can live independently, while still enjoying the privacy of your own home.
Our sheltered housing is for:
- older people aged 60+ who want extra assistance while living independently
- people with health or mobility issues
They are usually part of grouped housing schemes and are mostly one-bedroom flats, bungalows or bedsits.
Some have tenant and resident groups and activities, or communal areas for socialising.
Sheltered housing wardens
Sheltered housing wardens help to manage the tenancies. Their role includes:
- getting to know tenants
- keeping in touch regularly
- sharing information about local services
- acting as a contact point
- helping tenants connect with their Housing Officer
Paying for sheltered housing service
There is a sheltered housing service charge. This charge is included in your rent. It pays for the service. If you get benefits to help pay your rent, they will cover this service charge.
Every tenant in sheltered housing is charged for the service. This charge cannot be changed.
Telecare is not included. If you buy telecare services from NHS Highland or another provider, you get a bill from them.
How to apply for sheltered housing
Fill in an Highland Housing Register application to apply for our sheltered housing.
Get advice from your local Housing Office. They can advise on:
- the services and costs
- how long it might take to get an offer in our different sheltered housing schemes
- other housing options if you are older or have particular needs
Telecare service
Tenants can choose to connect to NHS Highland's 24-hour telecare service for emergencies, or can use another telecare service provider.
These services help tenants stay independent and can include:
- home care
- day care
- meal services
