Progress

Since 2021 a wide range of Active Travel (AT) infrastructure and initiatives have been delivered in line with the refreshed Active Travel Masterplan (2019):

  • The Soldiers Bridge renovation and the Black Parks route (see the separate Soldiers Bridge and Black Parks projects)
  • The Caol & Lochyside Flood Protection scheme with AT Route has been completed
  • A830 path widening around Lochaber High School
  • A830 Corpach to Loch Linnhe Holiday Park path with lighting completed
  • Resurfacing of the town centre underpass steps and handrail
  • High Street access control bollards
  • Old Fort to the College footway improvements
  • Bike storage racks and canopies at the West End Car Park and outside the railway station
  • HI-BIKE stations throughout the town
  • Junction improvements to improve walking, wheeling access, and cycle connectivity in Caol (Glen Loy Street and Torlundy Road. meet Kilmallie Road)

Current (2026-2027) AT projects include:

  • Upper Achintore Path works (between Angus Cr. and Aspen Wynd)
  • Fort William Railway Station improvements (discussions ongoing)
  • Active Travel improvements being appraised as part of the ITP
  • A path between Spean Bridge and Roy Bridge (discussions ongoing)
  • Bus Infrastructure Fund (BIF) projects

BIF projects include:

  • Blar Mhor Bus Gate (designs progressing through planning, with legal agreements under review construction possible 2026/2027 funding dependent)
  • Upper Achintore Bus Gate (currently progressing through planning likely to be completed 2027/28)
  • Fort William Bus Station feasibility work (phased improvements proposed hopefully to be delivered through existing funding streams and within the next couple of years)
  • A82 / Middle Street Junction bus priority turning improvements (investigated as part of the ITP)
