Council Tax Reduction

Reduce your Council Tax bill

Council Tax Reduction (CTR) is a scheme that helps people on low incomes pay their Council Tax. You can apply whether you rent or own your home. The amount of help you get depends on your income, savings, and household circumstances.

CTR does not reduce your Scottish Water charges.

If you are already receiving Council Tax Reduction, your entitlement will be automatically reviewed each year. You do not need to reapply unless your circumstances change.

Qualifying for Council Tax Reduction

You may qualify if:

  • you are responsible for paying Council Tax
  • you are on a low income
  • you have less than £16,000 in savings or capital (unless you receive Pension Credit Guarantee Credit)

You can apply even if you:

  • own your home
  • are self-employed
  • live with other adults who are not your partner

If someone else in your household is on a low income and not your partner, you might qualify for Second Adult Rebate instead.
