We offer two ways for children and young people to learn Gaelic:
- Gaelic Medium Education (GME) pupils are taught fully in Gaelic, from nursery to the end of secondary school
- Gaelic Learner Education (GLE) pupils learn Gaelic as an additional language, from Primary 1 to the end of secondary school
We are one of Scotland’s leading authorities in Gaelic education. Supporting Gaelic is one of our strategic priorities.
Our priorities for Gaelic education
We are working to:
- grow GME and GLE across Highland
- make sure every parent who wants Gaelic education for their child can access it
- provide consistent Gaelic education from early years through to secondary school
Our duty to support Gaelic education
We have a legal duty to promote and support Gaelic Medium Education (GME) and Gaelic Learner Education (GLE). This is set out in Section 15 of the Education (Scotland) Act 2016.
We aim to:
- offer high-quality and progressive Gaelic learning experiences
- support learners to continue Gaelic into secondary school
- help pupils achieve Gaelic (Learners) qualifications and awards in the Senior Phase
