The Highland Council has launched a public consultation on draft guidance aimed at reducing light pollution across Highland and is encouraging people to have their say.
Residents, communities, businesses and developers are being invited to help shape new guidance designed to protect Highland's internationally renowned dark skies, support wildlife and wellbeing, and strengthen opportunities for nature-based and astronomical tourism.
Chair of the Council's Economy and Infrastructure Committee, Councillor Ken Gowans, said: "Highland's dark skies are one of our greatest natural assets. They contribute to the special character of our communities, support wildlife and habitats, enhance people's wellbeing and attract visitors from around the world.
"As pressures from development and increasing levels of artificial lighting grow, it is important that we consider how lighting can be used responsibly and effectively while protecting the qualities that make Highland unique.
"This consultation provides an opportunity for everyone with an interest in our environment, communities and future development to help shape the guidance and future policy. Whether you are a resident, community group, business owner, developer or visitor, your views can help ensure we strike the right balance between safety, economic growth and protecting our night skies for future generations."
The draft guidance promotes the use of outdoor lighting only where it is needed and encourages lighting designs that minimise unnecessary glare, light spill and environmental impacts.
The proposed approach seeks to balance the need for safe and effective lighting with the protection of Highland's unique night-time environment. It is also expected to support communities interested in achieving Dark Sky status and enhance Highland's reputation as one of Europe's premier destinations for stargazing and outdoor tourism.
The consultation gives people the opportunity to influence exterior lighting guidance and future planning decisions that affect communities, businesses, major developments and infrastructure projects.
Feedback gathered through the consultation will help inform the final guidance and a future planning policy within the new Highland Local Development Plan (HLDP).
Following the consultation, responses will be reviewed and any proposed amendments to the guidance will be presented to Members for consideration before the document is finalised and adopted.
