Maintenance of an empty home

Empty homes are more likely to suffer damage, vandalism and wear and tear. To reduce the risk:

  • maintain gardens and outdoor spaces
  • check the property regularly
  • repair any damage
  • hang curtains or blinds
  • make sure the property is insured
  • leave a contact number with neighbours

Winter care

To prevent damage during winter:

  • insulate pipes and water tanks
  • check the stopcock and make sure it works
  • drain the system if the property will be empty for a long time
  • renew washers on dripping taps

Protecting your own home

To safeguard your property:

  • install security lighting
  • keep lights on when out
  • lock doors and windows
  • secure sheds and garages
  • protect valuables stored outside
