Road permits for the Small Isles and Knoydart

Apply for a permit

Allow for 7 working days to make an application before your planned trip. It is possible for us to post permits out, but we cannot guarantee that it will be delivered on time if you have not given enough notice. Your permit must be displayed on your vehicle.

To apply for a Resident’s permit, you must:

  • complete the Small Isles residents permit application form
  • provide a valid V5 vehicle registration document
  • show proof of a permanent address within the Small Isles or Knoydart (such as a Council Tax document)
  • holiday homeowners in Knoydart must provide proof of property ownership

Permit terms

  • The permit is valid for 12 months from the date of issue
  • It is linked to the specific vehicle registration number and cannot be transferred to another vehicle
  • The permit must be clearly displayed on the front or nearside of the vehicle at all times
  • If you sell or dispose of your vehicle, the permit must be returned to the issuing office. A new permit will only be issued in exchange for the old one
  • All conditions set out in the relevant Order must be followed at all times

How to apply

You can apply for a permit by:

  • emailing your application form and relevant documents to communityservices.lochaber@highland.gov.uk
  • posting your application form to Community Services, Carr's Corner Industrial Estate, Fort William PH33 6TL
  • prior appointment at our office in Fort William (email to arrange an appointment)
