Storage of building materials permit

Before starting work

If you need to store building materials on any part of a public road, footway, or verge, you must apply for permission from The Highland Council. This is a legal requirement under Sections 58 and 59 of the Roads (Scotland) Act 1984.

When you need permission

You must apply for a permit if you plan to store materials on:

  • The carriageway (road surface)
  • The footway (pavement)
  • The verge (grassy or unpaved roadside area)

Storing materials without permission is an offence and may result in enforcement action.

This permit only covers the storage of building materials. It does not allow you to:

  • Close a road or footway
  • Erect scaffolding or staging
  • Place other items not covered by this permit

Separate permissions must be obtained for these activities.

Before starting work, you must have received official permission from us.
