School transport

School bus travel behaviour code

To help keep everyone safe and ensure a pleasant journey, follow these rules when using school transport.

You should:

  • wait safely at the bus stop, well away from the road
  • agree a plan with your parent or carer in case the bus doesn’t arrive or you miss it
  • wait for the bus to stop before approaching - do not push or rush to get on
  • show your bus pass if you’ve been issued one
  • sit in an available seat, or in your assigned seat if your school has allocated places
  • keep the aisle clear - do not block it with bags or belongings
  • always wear your seatbelt while the bus is moving
  • do not distract the driver while they are driving
  • never throw anything inside the bus or out of the windows
  • do not damage or vandalise any part of the bus
  • only use emergency exits or operate doors in an emergency
  • follow all instructions from the driver or passenger assistant
  • wait for the bus to stop completely before standing to get off
  • leave the bus calmly, taking all your belongings and any litter with you
  • wait until the bus has moved away before crossing the road. Never cross in front of or close behind the bus
  • in the event of an accident, stay on the bus unless told to leave
  • if it is unsafe to stay, exit carefully and wait in a safe place away from the road and vehicle
  • avoid eating on the bus, unless you have a medical reason to do so
