Counterfeit goods

How we tackle counterfeit goods

Trading Standards investigates and takes action against the sale of counterfeit goods. Selling fake products using a registered trademark without permission is a criminal offence.

We have powers under the Trademarks Act to investigate and prosecute those who:

  • produce counterfeit goods
  • sell fake goods for financial gain
  • use trademarks without the owner’s permission

These offences can lead to substantial fines and imprisonment.

Why we take counterfeit goods seriously

Counterfeit goods are not just poor quality — they can be dangerous and support serious crime. We act because:

  • counterfeit electrical goods can cause injury or fire
  • fake websites may steal your personal or payment details
  • profits from counterfeit sales often fund organised crime, including drugs, terrorism, slavery and child labour
  • genuine businesses suffer financial losses, affecting jobs and local economies
