The Council has 80 elected members who meet in Inverness to set the policies and strategies of the Council and ratify the minutes of its committees. Minutes and agendas of the Council are published on this web site. Members also serve on the following Strategic Committees:
Resources
(All matters relating to the financial affairs of the Council; personnel, health and safety, legal services, training; management of non-housing properties and management of IS/IT services).
Education Culture and Sport
(Including education, arts, culture, sport and recreation).
Housing and Social Work
(Including housing management strategic and enabling functions, building maintenance; Community Care plans, Children’s Services plan).
Planning Environment and Development
(Including planning and building standards, economic development, tourism, environmental interests, countryside and heritage).
Transport, Environmental and Community (TEC) Services
(Including roads, harbours, ferries, flood prevention, transportation, waste management, consumer protection and public health).
The standards and effectiveness of the work of the Council are scrutinised by the Audit and Scrutiny Committee, which reports directly to the full Council.
Additionally there is a Comataidh na Gàidhlig / Gaelic Committee, which will promote the Gaelic language and culture.

The Council works with NHS Highland and other partners on the:
Joint Committee for Action on Community Care, which reports to the Housing and Social Work Committee; and the
Joint Committee on Children and Young People, which reports to the full Council.
Members also sit on the Northern Joint Police Board and the Highland and Islands Fire Board - boards which also comprise elected members from Orkney, Shetland and the Western Isles and the Highland and Western Isles Valuation Joint Board, which also involves members from the Western Isles.
