Apply for school transport
We help children and young people get to school by providing transport where needed. You may be able to get free school transport depending on your child’s age, distance from school, health or support needs, or the safety of the walking route.
You must apply by 28 February for transport to at the start school term.
When to apply
If your child requires school transport, including transport for pupils with Additional Support Needs (ASN), ensure you submit your application as early as possible.
Deadline for applications: 28 February for the start of the new school term.
ASN transport applications may take longer to process due to the need for assessments, planning, and coordination with schools and service providers. Late applications may result in delays.
Who can get transport
Your child may qualify for free school transport if they live within the catchment area of their school and:
- are under 8 years old and live more than 2 miles from school
- are 8 years or older and live more than 3 miles from school
- have a medical condition or additional support needs that affect their ability to walk to school
- would have to walk a route that is assessed by us as unsuitable for children, even if accompanied by an adult
We measure distance using the shortest available walking route. If your child lives closer than the qualifying distance but the walking route is not safe, we may still provide transport.
We follow Road Safety GB Guidelines when making road safety assessments. You can read more in our Home to School Transport policy.
